The sunshade are designed to block direct summer sun, but allow the sun to enter and warm up the space in the winter. The original brick wall was largely left in place to act as a heat sink.
A minor variance from the City of Toronto zoning by-laws was required to permit this front vestibule and roof extension. The new roof will eventually have a green roof on it.
